Kulakkattu Nagayakshi Amma Saranam
 

    History

              A glance into the cultural history of India will bring out the fact that ‘Nagaaradhana ‘ was one of the most common famous froms of worship in the whole land. It is believed that the equatorial forest of Kerala housed serpents in plenty that it was considered the Nagaloka. The various temples and serpent grooves that exist in Kerala forester ahandful of a legends regarding the origin of serpent worship in these places. The room of worship of traditional family deities now has Nagaraja and Nagayskshi in the family. Kulakkattu Kavu is one such serpent grove.

Goddess Kulallattu  Nagayakshi Amma is regarded as the most trusted and prosperous Goddess of  Mazhuvakkattu family of Kanichukulangara and the village of Mararikulam in Alappuzha District.Kerala State. India.

It is believed that God Parasurama who lived in Threthayuga laid the idol of this
Kulakkattu Nagayakshi Amma Temple. This holy Kulakkattu Nagayakshi Amma Temple is the symbol of Kerala’s  traditional Naga worship nd grove culture.


BANYAN TREE

               An old Banyan tree, stands close to the Kulakkattu Nagayakshi Amma temple. The trunk of this Banyan tree is completely decayed due to the old age and now the Banyan tree stands with the help of its supporting stem, which touches the soil. The age of this Banyan tree is believed to be more than thousands of years. This Banyan tree adds glory to the Kulakkattu Nagayakshi Amma temple. The leaves of the Banyan tree modified into present size through ages, now resembles a Citron leaf. The Kulakkattu Nagayakshi Amma temple is surrounded by valuable thick grooves, which reminds us of the thick dark forest of the past. It includes trees like Jamul, somecarpous, Cinnamon, Cane plants and various valuable herbs. There is a pond close to the Kulakkattu Nagayakshi Amma temple. The pond and the grooves together gives a holy atmosphere presence of different Naga Gods like Naga Raja, AnjalaManinaga, Paranaga, Kuzhinaga etc are felt here. The centuries old Kulakkattu Nagayakshi Amma temple was re-constructed by my father Late Parameswaran Nair and Uncle MEV Kumar. The idol was re-installed on 17th June 1999 at 1135 Hrs on Ayilyam day by Brammasree SREEDHARAN  NAMBOOTHIRI, Amedayil, Udayamperoor, Ernakulam. The evil spirits, which dominated the Kulakkattu Nagayakshi Amma temple where captivatedand fixed at Kodungaloor temple. A miraculous incidents was noticed on the day of captiovation.All the near by places except Kulakkattu Nagayakshi Amma temple experienced heavy rainfall. On the way toKodungaloor the devotees felt thirsty. The time was past midnight, and all the shops

were found closed. Suddenly a sparkling light wasnoticed from the near by house. The devotees moved towards the house, to their surprise a pot full of water and a glass was placed there. It was a Brahmin Illam. The devotees quenched their thirst and resumed their journey. After reaching the Kulakattu Nagayakshi Amma temple the devotees were busy with cleaning up thearea at the very moment a heavy rainfall occurred, as if the Goddess herself  purified the area.

 

Intially the Kulakkattu Nagayakshi Amma temple had thatched roof caught fire on a few occasions . There for the Grand Father Late. Narayana Kurup decided to tile the roof and strengthen the Kulakkattu Nagayakshi Amma temple.

 

Many devotees experienced the power of Kulakkattu Nagayakshi Amma. Their distant Grand Mother Jagadamma’s father who entered the groove to cut a branch of the Jamul tree and lost her eye sight instantly in childhood. The paddy field situated on the western side was owned by a rich family residing at Kanichukulangara. The owners wife persuaded their worker to encroach the land of the Kulakkattu Nagayakshi Ammas temple, while carrying out the task the worker felt uneasy and fainted. The worker lost hias eyesight at the same time the owners wife too lost her eyesight forever. Thisincident was an sye-opener to all. No one ever dared to enter the premises and disturb the sanity of the Kulakattu Nagayakshi Amma temple.

 

It is believed that a stream existed in front of the Kulakkattu Nagayakshi Amma temple, this stream was used by the Kulakkattu Nagayakshi Amma (Snake goddess). The snake god traveled through the stream to visit Lord Vishnu who dewelt at Mararikkulam Mahadeva Temple. It is said that Kulakkattu Nagayakshi Amma resides the temple while other Naga Gods like Nagaraja, Anjalamani Nagan, Kuzhinagam etc are allowed toreside at the near by surrounding area only. It is a noted fact that there is no rain on Pooja time even in the raining season.
